What is Therapy for Depression?

Therapy for depression is a collaborative process that looks at the emotional, cognitive, and physical experiences behind low mood, loss of interest, and exhaustion. Together we look at how your thoughts, relationships, and life experiences shape how depression shows up for you. Over time, therapy can help you build greater emotional awareness and coping skills, and reconnect with yourself and the people around you.

What Sets Us Apart

I work with teens and adults, with a focus on emotional and relational understanding. Rather than working only to reduce symptoms, I look at how experiences, losses, transitions, and internal patterns shape mood and motivation.

You'll have a space that feels respectful, collaborative, and attuned to your individual experience.

How Therapy for Depression Helps

Therapy does not lift depression overnight, but when you have space to process what has felt stuck or overwhelming, things often begin to shift gradually.

What Often Changes:

  • It becomes easier to recognize and respond to patterns that contribute to depression.

  • Difficult emotions can feel more manageable and less overwhelming.

  • There may be greater capacity to engage in everyday activities and relationships.

  • Self-critical patterns can become easier to recognize and challenge.

If depression has been making life feel smaller or heavier, therapy can offer support and guidance.

Making Sense of What You're Carrying

Many people live with depression for years while pushing themselves to keep going. Therapy offers a space to slow down, understand what you have been carrying, and begin responding to it with care.

What Therapy Can Support:

  • A clearer understanding of emotional patterns.

  • Support for navigating sadness, emptiness, or exhaustion.

  • Tools for managing daily life.

  • A space to process difficult experiences at your own pace.

FAQs About Therapy for Depression

  • How is therapy for depression different from just medication?

Medication can be an important part of treatment for some people, and may help reduce symptoms of depression. Therapy can help you understand what is contributing to how you feel, build coping skills, and work through the experiences and patterns underneath the depression. For many people, therapy and medication complement each other, and I am happy to coordinate with a prescriber when that is helpful.

  • Can therapy help if I have felt this way for a long time?

Yes. Many people have lived with low mood or a sense of numbness for a long time, sometimes so long that it feels like part of who they are. Therapy offers a space to understand where those feelings come from and to begin responding to them differently. Change can take time, especially when something has been present for years, and we work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

  • What if I don't know exactly what's making me feel this way?

That is very common, and you do not need to have it figured out before starting. Many people come in knowing something feels off without being able to name why. Part of the work is exploring your experiences together and making sense of what is contributing to how you feel, so clarity is something we build along the way rather than a requirement to begin.

  • Do I have to be at my lowest point to benefit from therapy?

No. You do not have to reach a crisis or a certain level of struggling to deserve support. Some people come in during an especially hard stretch, and others reach out because they have been quietly worn down for a while and want to feel more like themselves. Therapy can be helpful at many different points, not only the lowest ones.

  • What happens in the first session?

The first session is mostly a conversation. We talk about what brought you in, a bit of your history, and what you are hoping for, and there is no pressure to share more than you are comfortable with. It is also a chance for you to get a feel for working together and to ask any questions you have before we decide on next steps.
