What Is Therapy for Anxiety?

Therapy for anxiety looks at the thought patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors that can contribute to ongoing worry and distress. My approach combines practical strategies for managing anxiety with a deeper understanding of the patterns that may be contributing to it.

It combines practical tools for managing symptoms with deeper exploration of what is actually driving the anxiety so that over time it feels less in control and more like something you can work with.

What Sets Us Apart

I work with teens and adults and understand how anxiety shows up at this stage of life. Not just as worry but as perfectionism, procrastination, avoidance, and the pressure to have everything figured out.

My approach is both practical and exploratory. You get tools you can use right away alongside a deeper understanding of where the anxiety is coming from.

How Therapy for Anxiety Helps

Therapy does not make stress disappear, but as you understand how your anxiety works, it can become something you respond to rather than something that runs the show.

What Often Changes:

  • Worry feels less consuming and easier to manage.

  • Avoidance becomes easier to recognize and address.

  • There is less pressure to respond perfectly or have everything figured out.

  • Difficult situations can feel more manageable, even when anxiety is still present.

Making Sense of Your Anxiety

A lot of people spend years pushing through anxiety without fully understanding what drives it. Therapy provides space to explore those patterns and build more effective ways of responding.

What Therapy Can Support:

  • Identifying situations and experiences that tend to trigger anxiety.

  • Recognizing patterns of thinking that contribute to worry or overthinking.

  • Understanding the role of perfectionism, avoidance, or difficulty with uncertainty.

  • Looking at how anxiety affects relationships, work, school, and everyday decisions.

FAQs About Therapy for Anxiety

  • How is your approach different from CBT-only therapy?

CBT is a helpful, structured approach, and I draw on it, but I don't limit myself to it. Alongside practical tools for managing anxiety in the moment, I make room to explore what is driving it underneath. For many people, combining concrete strategies with a deeper understanding of the anxiety is what makes the work feel meaningful rather than surface-level.

  • What is your approach to therapy for anxiety?

My approach is individualized and draws from both cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. This means we may work on practical strategies for responding differently to anxious thoughts and behaviors while also exploring the patterns, experiences, and underlying concerns that contribute to anxiety.

  • Can therapy help with physical anxiety symptoms?

Anxiety often shows up in the body, as tension, restlessness, trouble sleeping, or a racing heart. Therapy can help you understand the connection between what you are thinking and feeling and what you are experiencing physically, and it can offer strategies for responding to those physical symptoms as well.

  • Will I need medication along with therapy?

Not necessarily. Many people work through anxiety with therapy alone, while others find that a combination of therapy and medication works best for them. As a psychologist I do not prescribe, but if medication is worth considering, we can talk about it and, when helpful, coordinate with your physician or a psychiatrist.
